He was raised by Arl Eamon, a nice chap-- whose wife absolutely hated Alistair, thinking that he was the Arl's son, and after a few incidents of making him sleep with the dogs, Alistair was sent off to the Chantry, to be raised as a Templar. Which was all well and good until the Blight (very scary, very frightening) happened, and suddenly Alistair was taken away from his Templar training and became a Grey Warden, one tasked with destroying the Darkspawn and ending the Blight. (Very scary. Very frightening.) Things got out of hand and he was left as the last one of two Wardens capable of doing anything in Ferelden, and then promptly got even more out of hand when he wound up in a strange alternate dimension where he was supposed to be helping put color back in the world.
